The Crémant d’Alsace appellation is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
In 1976, the French National Institute for Appellations d’Origine officially stamped the Crémant d’Alsace appellation for this sparkling wine.
It was the third Crémant appellation to be officially approved in France after Burgundy and Loire (both receiving the label in 1975).
At the time, these three regions (Alsace, Burgundy and Loire) worked hand in hand to enhance their sparkling wines developed over decades using traditional methods.
The Crémant appellation sprang from a desire to promote a top-quality product and set it apart from other conventional sparkling wines produced using other processes.
Today, Crémant d’Alsace is flourishing. It’s the top-ranking Crémant in France (there are now 7 Crémant appellations in France) with 30% of the AOP sparkling wine market (excepting Champagne) consumed in France.
Crémant d’Alsace represents 33 million bottles produced per year and 25% of wine production in Alsace.
